Acutally it's photohop (or whatever imaging software you're using) that causes the odd thumbnail backgrounds. You remember that Color and Transparency are separate channels of data that exist independently. The funky colors you see is channel data that still exists in the empty space of your images, but you never see it because it's transparent. Your paint software generated this funky color data to begin with, and there's a reason. If you had, let's say, a plain white backround that was still in your color channels, then as the colors fade to transparent you would be able to see white in the semi-transparent pixels-- you would have a faint white outline around your image. So what your Paint software is doing is it's taking the color on the edge of the transparency and extending it outward. This is so that the color along the edges of the image remain consistent as it fades out. DA doesn't really change the image, it simply reads only the color channels and discards the transparency channel as it generates the thumbnail, thereby exposing the hiddent color data.

And... incidentally, if you really wanted the thumbnails to look right, I would have no problem writing a script could do that for you.
